OUR styles

BENI OUARRAIN

These rugs are surprisingly modern looking, featuring minimalist designs of diamonds, triangles or naive figures in black on a white or cream background. Their abstract simplicity made them attractive to famous modernist architects in the 1920’s and 30’s, such as Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto. They are considered to be the most prestigious rugs in Morocco, made from the very finest wool.

AZILAL

Rugs from the Azilal province are rare and were almost unknown to the market until the late 1990's. Their wool tends to be finer, producing a lustrous, almost cloth-like covering. They feature simplistic geometric shapes and patterns with dashes of vibrant colours always on a cream background.

BOUCHEROUITE

Boucherouite rugs are a riot of colour – pinks, blues, reds and yellows – all jostling for attention in wildly exuberant patterns, sometimes geometric, sometimes totally abstract. Typically made from a variety of textiles in “rag rug” style so they’re machine-washable and easy to maintain. If you’re looking for something chunky, funky and fun to brighten up your home... a Boucherouite rug is for you!

HANBAL

The Berber version of flat wovenrugs.

Typically made by wool yarns woven with very high precision, women integrate often metallic pieces in those rugs giving them beautiful shiny touch.

OUR BACKGROUND

We are two Moroccan enthusiasts who love the Berber handcraft. We were born in Beni Mellal, a city by the Atlas mountains, home land of the berber tribes. We both grew up in the middle of this fabulous culturally rich environment, but it took us a while before we realise its full value.

Actually, We have both spent many years in France and Sweden. We travelled around the world where we have witnessed 2 main evolutions.

On one hand, the Berber folk art has become more and more popular among artists, designers, decorators and other enthusiasts; mainly in Europe and North America. Antiquaries have started roaming the Moroccan villages to acquire the most beautiful pieces for little money, and sell them worldwide with tremendous margins.

On the other hand, the Moroccan average people have started another race, a rather confused one towards apparent modernity. They rushed to acquire imported, synthetic and machine-made items, perceived as synonyms of robustness and progress. They may have traded, in the process, authentic treasures for superficial appearances.

These trends combined didn’t benefit to the local Berber communities who live generally in rugged areas, far from the opportunities concentrated in big cities.

We are proud to see our Berber craftsmanship highly appreciated worldwide and we are committed to spread it even more. But as much as we love to see this keen interest last forever, we feel the need of a more social approach, which put the Berber women and the local communities in the center again. After all, they are the artists.

So here we are With Berber Rituals, trying to create a happy life for the many people in a more fair and meaningful world.
